History
The first library in the Hastings District was established in 1876 in the town of Hastings. The library was originally housed in a small room in the town hall. In 1913, the library moved to a new building on Russell Street. In 1963, the library moved to its current location on Heretaunga Street.
The Havelock North Library was established in 1921. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Havelock North Town Hall. In 1967, the library moved to a new building on Te Mata Road.
The Flaxmere Library was established in 1972. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Flaxmere Community Centre. In 1996, the library moved to a new building on Flaxmere Avenue.
The Clive Library was established in 1975. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Clive Community Centre. In 2002, the library moved to a new building on Main Road.
The Waimarama Library was established in 1981. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Waimarama Community Centre. In 2006, the library moved to a new building on Waimarama Road.
The Waipawa Library was established in 1984. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Waipawa Community Centre. In 2009, the library moved to a new building on Ruataniwha Street.
The Otane Library was established in 1987. The library was originally housed in a small room in the Otane Community Centre. In 2012, the library moved to a new building on Main Road.
Governance
Hastings District Libraries is governed by a board of trustees appointed by the Hastings District Council. The board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the libraries and overseeing their operation.
