Chess - Play and Learn

Introduction

Chess is a classic strategy board game played between two players on an 8x8 checkered board with 64 squares of alternating colors. The game involves moving pieces across the board according to specific rules, with the objective of putting the opponent's king into a position known as "checkmate," where it is under immediate threat of capture and cannot escape.

Game Setup

The game begins with each player setting up their pieces on the board as follows:

* Back Row: Rooks on the corners, knights next to them, bishops beside the knights, queen on its own color (white queen on white square, black queen on black square), king next to the queen.

* Second Row: Pawns on all squares.

Piece Movement

Each type of piece has unique rules for movement:

* King: Moves one square in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).

* Queen: Moves any number of squares along a rank (row), file (column), or diagonal.

* Rook: Moves any number of squares along a rank or file.

* Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally, staying on the same color.

* Knight: Moves in an "L" pattern - two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. It can jump over other pieces.

* Pawn: Moves one square forward, except for its initial move where it can move two squares. Captures diagonally forward one square.

Special Moves

* Castling: A special move involving the king and one of the rooks, where the king moves two squares towards a rook, which then jumps over the king.

* En Passant: A special pawn capture that can occur when a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn.

* Promotion: If a pawn reaches the opposite side of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (queen, rook, bishop, or knight) of the same color.

Check and Checkmate

When the king is under immediate threat of capture, it is said to be in "check." The player in check must make a move to remove the threat, either by moving the king, capturing the attacking piece, or blocking the attack. If the player cannot make a legal move to escape check, it is "checkmate" and the game is over.

Stalemate

If a player is not in check but has no legal moves, it is a "stalemate" and the game ends in a draw.

Game Objectives

The ultimate goal of chess is to put the opponent's king into checkmate. Other objectives include:

* Controlling the center of the board.

* Developing pieces early in the game.

* Protecting the king.

* Planning ahead and anticipating opponent's moves.
