Russian Checkers

Overview

Russian checkers, also known as shashki, is a strategy board game played on an 8x8 checkered board with 12 pieces per player. The game is similar to international draughts, but with some key differences in rules and gameplay.

Setup

The board is set up with alternating dark and light squares, with each player occupying the three rows closest to them. The pieces are placed on the dark squares, with each player having 12 pieces initially.

Gameplay

Players take turns moving their pieces diagonally forward one square at a time. If a piece lands on an adjacent square occupied by an opponent's piece, it can capture the opponent's piece by jumping over it and landing on the empty square beyond. Multiple captures can be made in a single turn if the jumping piece lands on another opponent's piece.

Kings

When a piece reaches the opposite end of the board, it becomes a king. Kings can move diagonally forward or backward, allowing them to capture pieces in either direction.

Winning

The game is won by one of the following conditions:

* Capturing all of an opponent's pieces

* Blocking an opponent's pieces from making any legal moves

* Achieving a draw by stalemate (no legal moves for either player)

Rules

* Only dark squares are used for gameplay.

* Pieces move diagonally forward.

* Captures are mandatory if possible.

* Kings can move forward or backward.
